The Artist’s Statement: Beginning in 1960 I was making abstract expression-type paintings. As time went on my works were getting thicker and thicker with paint. I loved the three-dimensional qualaity. Then I met Fred Hicks, who was selling a new material “mylar” for individual use. He offered to provide me with rolls of it to work with. When I developed a method of using this new medium – a combination of plastic and mylar – applied on wood, working with a propane torch, I felt I had found my way - so to speak. I worked with this medium for over 15 years. But at a certain point I felt I had to stop using plastics due to the exposure to the fumes from the melting plastic. It was a wonderful medium to work with – I was excited every day!

The Mylar Process: These unusual three-dimensional gold and silver artworks were created by the artist using polyethylene Mylar sheets that were melted using a propane torch, then manipulated by the artist to create the unique patterns and surfaces that comprise these striking compositions.

The result is essentially a new medium to create Mylar three-dimensional sculpted paintings that are stable, colorfast and long-lasting.
